Bye-week football was ugly and close. Thursday night, Sam Darnold threw 51 passes, got sacked five times and threw the overtime interception that set up Wil Lutz's 53-yarder in a 17–14 Broncos win, on a night Bo Nix threw for 107 yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes. In London, Ka'imi Fairbairn's 49-yarder beat the Jaguars 34–31 as time expired after C.J. Stroud threw for 312 and three scores and Travis Hunter did something nobody had done in 40 years: a receiving touchdown and an interception in the same game. Arizona beat the Rams 18–16 on six Chad Ryland field goals and zero touchdowns, Cleveland beat Baltimore 13–10 on Deshaun Watson's fourth game-winning drive of the year, and the 49ers held off Washington 23–17 on Monday night to stay 6-0, with Christian McCaffrey scoring twice.
Caleb Williams came back from his hamstring and went 30 of 36 for 305 in Chicago's 31–23 win in Atlanta, which finally produced a useful Colston Loveland game (6 for 65 and a score) while Bijan Robinson managed 61 yards on nine carries and minus eight receiving. Tyler Shough threw four touchdowns without a pick as the Saints scored 34 straight on the Giants, who benched Jameis Winston for J.J. McCarthy; Malik Nabers caught 12 passes for 165 in the loss. Kenneth Walker III ran for 128 and two scores in Kansas City's 22–6 win over the winless Chargers, James Cook had 153 scrimmage yards as the Bills beat the Raiders 33–30, Chuba Hubbard carried 28 times for 120 as Carolina handed the Eagles a fourth straight loss, and rookie Germie Bernard caught 11 passes and the overtime winner for Pittsburgh.
The big injury news is Jalen Hurts. The Eagles put him on injured reserve with what was first called a superficial blood clot in his calf, and further testing found clots in his lungs. He's on blood thinners, the team says the prognosis for a full recovery is very good, and he is expected to miss the rest of the season. Tanner McKee started in his place. Will Shipley partially tore his plantar fascia, Romeo Doubs hurt his shoulder on his own touchdown, Lamar Jackson and Rashee Rice sat out again, Rams kicker Blake Grupe hurt a knee, and Quinshon Judkins was ruled out, which one owner in this league found out the hard way.
